In a distressing turn of events, the vibrant atmosphere of Mussoorie`s cherished Mall Road may soon be plunged into darkness, as a bitter dispute escalates between the Mussoorie Municipality and the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) over unpaid electricity bills.

Tensions have soared as both parties engage in a heated war of words and confrontation over the mounting debt for street lighting services. The situation has reached a critical point, with the imminent threat of UPCL disconnecting the street light connections due to the municipality`s failure to settle its outstanding bills.

Despite warnings and negotiations, the Municipality of Mussoorie failed to honor its financial obligations by the end of the fiscal year, aggravating the standoff. Adding fuel to the fire, the municipality remains steadfast in its demand for UPCL to settle a long-standing property tax debt dating back to 1994, totaling a staggering ₹4 crores.

The municipality asserts its right to recover the outstanding property tax owed by UPCL, citing properties such as transmission centers, guest houses, and transformers situated on its premises. Municipality officials are adamant that UPCL must adjust this debt against its own pending property tax liabilities to the municipality.

With the municipality`s debt to UPCL amounting to ₹1.18 crores for street lighting services and a total of 68 connections at stake, the situation has escalated dramatically. Just fifteen days ago, UPCL took drastic action by disconnecting electricity to the street lights, exacerbating the already tense situation.

As the conflict intensifies, residents and tourists alike fear the repercussions of a potential blackout on Mussoorie`s iconic Mall Road, a cherished hub of activity and leisure during the summer holidays.
