Noida elevator death raise concerns in Dehradun about maintenance
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in a multi-storey housing society in Noida, as a 70-year-old woman lost her life when the elevator she was in plummeted to the ground floor. The shocking incident has left the community in mourning and has prompted discussions about the urgent need for enhanced elevator maintenance and safety protocols, not only in Noida but also in Dehradun, where the proliferation of high-rise buildings has been on the rise.
Though authorities have launched a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, focusing on both the building`s construction company and the maintenance staff responsible for the elevator`s upkeep. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of elevator safety, especially in urban areas like Dehradun, which has been witnessing a swift transformation with an increasing number of towering structures. The incident has raised alarm bells, urging local authorities and residents of high-rise buildings to reevaluate lift maintenance protocols and equip themselves with essential survival skills, should a similar situation arise.
Experts caution against underestimating the potential risks associated with elevator malfunctions, highlighting that even though such incidents are relatively rare, the consequences can be severe. In situations where an elevator goes into a freefall, individuals are advised not to remain standing. The sheer force of impact during a sudden fall can lead to serious injuries, primarily to the head. Bone fractures and head injuries are among the most common outcomes in such scenarios.
Contrary to popular misconceptions, jumping inside a falling elevator is not a recommended strategy for escaping unhurt. Experts suggest that the best course of action is to lie flat on one`s back, a posture that helps distribute the body`s weight evenly and reduces the risk of severe injuries. While fractures to the limbs may still occur, adopting this position significantly increases the likelihood of survival.
As the community mourns the loss of Susheela Devi, her tragic passing has ignited a pressing conversation about elevator safety measures. It is hoped that this incident will serve as a catalyst for collaborative efforts between authorities, building developers, and residents of high-rise buildings to implement rigorous elevator maintenance schedules and ensure that residents are well-informed about the appropriate actions to take in the event of an elevator failure. Only through proactive measures and collective responsibility can such unfortunate incidents be prevented in the future.
